Common Questions About Home EEG
Will it hurt?
No, not at all. An EEG is completely painless and non-invasive. The sensors are simply placed on your scalp with a water-soluble paste. It feels similar to having small sized stickers applied to your skin. Many patients find the procedure so relaxing they actually fall asleep.
Will I get an electric shock?
Absolutely not. The EEG electrodes only record the natural electrical signals your brain is already making. They do not send any electricity into your body. It is 100% safe for everyone, including infants and pregnant women.
Do I have to shave my head or cut my hair?
No, your hair remains exactly as it is. We do not need to cut or shave any hair. We simply part the hair to place the sensors directly on the scalp. The paste we use is water-soluble and washes out easily with regular shampoo after the test.
How long does it take?
It depends on the depth of the diagnosis. A Routine EEG usually takes about 20 to 40 minutes. However, because brain activity changes over time, your doctor might recommend a Long-term or Ambulatory EEG, which can last from several hours to a few days to ensure we capture the most accurate data.
Will I need to be in one place during the EEG?
Not necessarily. While Routine EEGs are done in a clinical setting, Mocxa’s modern infrastructure allows for Ambulatory EEG. This means you can wear a small, portable device and go about your normal day at home or in your hospital room while your brain activity is recorded wirelessly. You are free to move, go to the bathroom, eat, browse on your phone. You might need to be in the range of the video camera for most part of the EEG.
What if I don’t have a seizure during the EEG?
The test is still highly valuable. Neurologists look for “interictal” activity—subtle electrical patterns that happen between seizures. Even if you feel perfectly normal during the test, these small markers give your doctors the clues they need to provide an accurate diagnosis and the right treatment plan.
